Praia da Marinha, AlgarvePortugal lies in Western Europe (Cape Saint Vincent in Sagres, is famous for being the most Western part of Europe), where it borders with Spain to the North and East then the Atlantic Ocean to the South and West and also includes the Atlantic Islands Maderia and the Azores. It has both beach and ski resorts, with the beach resorts being the most popular.  The highest mountain in Portugal is Serra da Estrella, which is a popular ski resort, but the mountains do not stop here. A range of mountains divides Alentejo from the Algarve, which has the most popular beach resorts in all of Portugal. The country is divided into five parts known as: Porto and the North, Beiros, Lisbon, Alentjo and the Algarve.

Back street in PortugalPortugal was once overshadowed by its neighbour Spain, however it is beginning to make its way into the light. It has recently been stated that buyers are looking towards Portugal rather than Spain for its authenticity which will be there to stay, even though new developments, infrastructure and tourism have increased. Portugal has its own language, picture postcard scenery, culture, identity and customs and should not be mistaken as “Spain’s little sister”.

Golf is one of the major developed sectors within Portugal with keen golfers travelling all year round to get at least a few holes in during the day-long sunshine and cloudless skies. The Algarve is the popular destination for golf with fabulous golf courses (see Mission Impossible 2 for one of the many) as well as new courses in the pipe lines. Many spas are being incorporated within the golfing resorts to facilitate any of those who are not interested in playing golf as well as for those who need to relax after their round.
Golf is not the only popular sport though, with many travelling to play tennis, go fishing, horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and many more.

Portugal is well known throughout the world for their production of port and cork and has enough World Heritage Sites, diversity and idyllic weather to keep visitors coming back year after year.

Travel

There are four main international airports in Portugal with Lisbon being the largest. Faro airport caters for the Algarve, which generates the most revenue from tourism and it is the second largest airport. Porto (also known as Francisco Sá Carneiro), has got an ever growing number of passengers, which has lead to the airport going through expansions. It was due to have a subway system which was planned for 2005 but has been postponed indefinitely. Funchal airport caters for international and domestic flights for the island of Madeira. In 2000 the runway was rebuilt and went on to win the Outstanding Structures award given by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).

Portugal is also accessible by ferry, sailing into Bilboa, however it is a few hours' drive through Spain until you reach the border.
