Free foto imageCyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, nestled in the midst of three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe), where East meets West - but the diversity doesn't stop here. Spas, beach resorts, rugged mountains, golf courses, wine and culinary tours, traditional villages and ancient castles are just a few attractions that repeatedly draw tourists to this delightful, eclectic country. It is a mix of cosmopolitan towns and charming villages. A country where you'll be able to discover ancient ruins, citrus groves and vineyards. The south coast boasts top beach resorts and plenty of sunshine, while northern Cyprus is much more laid back and tranquil.

Cyprus has a rather eventful history with colonial rule being at the heart of its problems. During the late 1870’s, Britain took administration of Cyprus although it still remained under the Ottoman Empire, however Britain pulled out during World War 1. The Turkish relinquished all rights to Cyprus in 1923 and in 1925 the country became a Crown Colony. In the 1970’s Turkey invaded Cyprus and is still today illegally occupying around 37% of the North of the country.

Turkey established the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” which is an illegal state, only recognised as a state by Turkey. After 30 years of separation between the North and the South the two sides are beginning to come together with the North of the country trying to gain entry into the EU, and as efforts to reunify the island, a symbolic wall dividing the two communities was opened in April 2008. Southern Cyprus gained entry into the EU in May 2004 and changed their currency in January 2008 to the Euro.

Travel

Cyprus has two functioning international airports, which are fairly small in size but manage high volumes of passengers travelling through during the summer months.

Larnaca (Larnaka) is situated on the Southern coast of the Island and is the main entry point, as well as being the larger of the two airports. Paphos (Pafos) airport is used by tourists wanting to reach the west of the country which provides access to popular resorts such as Coral Bay, Limassol and Paphos itself. A new terminal is due to be opened in November 2008 to facilitate the growing number of passengers each year.

North CyprusTourism

Cyprus is rich with cultural heritage with Paphos having been included in the UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage sites. The island is well known for its superb collection of ancient archaeological sites and numerous churches, monasteries and mosques as well as being a fantastic year round destination where the climate is easy to predict. The type of experience you wish to gain all depends on the time of year you decide to travel.
