Resort in FuerteventuraFuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands and is the closest island to the African coast, lying east of Morocco. With white, sandy beaches, varying sea conditions which provide well for bathers and water-sport fanatics, many Europeans are now finding the time to book a flight to the recently expanded airport to find out what this island has to offer them. Whether you are looking to bask in the sun or an active holiday, Fuerteventura can offer it.

American Star shipwreck, FuerteventuraFuerteventura has a long and exciting history, beginning with the island being divided between two aboriginal tribes. Originally, the island was called Herbania due to the wall that divided the north and south of the island for the two tribes. The conquests of the island began in 1402 with many pirate invasions taking place, some of which had ruinous effects to the capital city. From that point, castles were built along the coastline to try and protect the island against these destructive invasions. By 1812, Fuerteventura became part of the Spanish province which improved the island's economic progress and number of tourists visiting. Today, there are still remains of the wall that divided the island.

Windsurfing & kitesurfing in Fuerteventura, René Egli centreThis island has been well known for many years for its potential in water-sports and with more people looking for active pursuits, schools are appearing around the island to teach all levels. For over 20 years, windsurfing competitions have taken place in Sotavento, Jandia and in 2001 kite surfing took off. The events offered at the P.W.A and P.K.R.A competitions are speed, slalom and free-style. If the trade winds aren’t looking their best for a few days, surfing is yet another water-sport option. Fuerteventura was discovered as a surfer’s paradise in the eighties and was nick-named “The European Hawaii” with the best spots located at the north of the island. If you would like to discover what happens underneath the water, diving and snorkelling are also available.

Flamingos in FuerteThere are plenty of other ways to enjoy the island that can be spent away from the beach with museums, a zoo, botanical gardens and (more recently to the island) golf.  The first golf course, Fuerteventura Golf Course, was constructed and created in 2002 in Costa Caleta which provides excellent greens, a 5 star club house and Elba Palace Golf Resort Hotel and is only 200 metres from the beach and is close to shopping and entertainment facilities. By 2004, Fuerteventura Golf was the host of the Spanish Open. Since then, four additional golf courses have been made, some of which will be in use in the near future, which holiday-makers can enjoy.

Other treats in store for tourists and locals alike is the capital Puerto del Rosario which is based around a port that has continued to develop throughout the years.  Most recently, plans have been made to develop the port to allow for more cruise liners to be accomodated.  Due to the predicted increasing numbers of tourists, the entire seafront at Puerto del Rosario is being developed and improved where much of the work took place during 2007.  And for those looking for a break away from the beach, they can wander the town and find the many statues that have been produced and displayed for the open air exhibitions that take place.

Travel
Fuerteventura Airport went through expansion during 2007-2008; the runway was enlarged, a new control tower was built and the terminal and car and coach park facilities were enlarged to cater for the increasing numbers of tourists visiting and locals going abroad. There are many airline operators including low-cost airlines who fly from the UK to Fuerteventura.

Property
With the ever increasing number of tourists, low cost of living and cheap properties to hand, it’s clear why investors are looking closely at the island. The number of developments has increased to cater for the demand; however the planners are being very considerate to the current surroundings with many developments not reaching past two-storeys. There are a good number of off plan sales incentives to delve into.

Language
The island is a Spanish colonial and therefore all the locals speak Spanish. English and German are well known in tourist areas.
